Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian polar explorer whose expeditions combined maritime travel, polar sledging, and early aviation. He led the expedition that reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911 and had earlier completed the first ship passage through the Northwest Passage. In 1926 he co-led the Norge airship flight across the Arctic, an expedition associated with the first verified crossing over the North Pole; he disappeared in 1928 while flying on a rescue mission for survivors of the Italia airship expedition.
