description Rocher du Diamant Overview
Rocher du Diamant, or Diamond Rock, is a steep basalt island in the Caribbean Sea off the southern coast of Martinique. It rises about 175 metres above the water and has a faceted profile that led to its comparison with a diamond. During the Napoleonic Wars, British forces occupied the rock and treated it as a commissioned naval vessel, HMS Diamond Rock, before French forces regained control in 1805. Today it is an uninhabited natural landmark known for its geology, maritime history, and seabird habitat.
