description Roy Bean Overview
Roy Bean was an American saloonkeeper and self-appointed justice who operated in Langtry, Texas, during the late nineteenth century. He held court in his saloon, the Jersey Lilly, and issued decisions under a loosely interpreted version of Texas law. Bean became associated with the phrase "the law west of the Pecos," although his authority and legal training were limited. His reputation later grew through frontier folklore and popular Western writing.
