Salmon P. Chase was an American statesman, lawyer, and jurist who served as the sixth Chief Justice of the United States from 1864 until his death in 1873. As President Abraham Lincoln's Treasury Secretary, he helped establish the national banking system and supported a uniform national currency during the Civil War. As Chief Justice, Chase presided over the 1868 Senate impeachment trial of President Andrew Johnson.
