Salchow Jump

description Salchow Jump Overview

The Salchow is an edge jump in figure skating, named after Swedish skater Ulrich Salchow, who is credited with introducing it in the early twentieth century. A skater approaches backward, takes off from the back inside edge of one foot, rotates in the air, and lands on the back outside edge of the opposite foot. Unlike toe jumps, the Salchow uses the skating edge itself for takeoff. It is performed in singles and pairs skating and is a basic element in technical competition.
