description Santahamina Esker Overview
Santahamina Esker is a named glacial sand-and-gravel landform on Santahamina, an island and neighborhood in eastern Helsinki, Finland. Eskers form when meltwater flowing through or beneath retreating ice deposits stratified sediment, so the feature records the effects of the Quaternary glaciations that shaped southern Finland. Santahamina is also a restricted military area, which places this coastal geological feature within a landscape whose access and land use are shaped by defense facilities.
