description Scutum Overview
Scutum is a small constellation in the southern celestial hemisphere, lying just south of the celestial equator. Johannes Hevelius introduced it in 1684 as Scutum Sobiescianum, or the Shield of Sobieski, to honor Polish King John III Sobieski after the 1683 relief of Vienna. The International Astronomical Union adopted Scutum as one of the 88 modern constellations in 1922, and its official abbreviation is Sct.
