Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov is a Russian diplomat who has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 9 March 2004. Before becoming foreign minister, he was Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York from 1994 to 2004, after earlier diplomatic work at the UN and in the Soviet and Russian foreign ministries. As foreign minister, he represents the Russian government in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy.
