Stockholmsåsen is a glacial esker, a long ridge of sand and gravel deposited by meltwater beneath or within glacial ice. In Stockholm it is also known as Brunkebergsåsen and forms elevated ground through parts of the city, where the natural ridge influenced the shape and levels of central districts. The feature is therefore both a geological record of the last Ice Age and an element of Stockholm's urban landscape, rather than a constructed embankment.
