description Sturt Stony Desert Overview

Sturt Stony Desert is an arid region of inland Australia extending across northeastern South Australia and into southwestern Queensland. It was named for explorer Charles Sturt, whose expedition encountered the difficult stone-covered terrain in the nineteenth century. The landscape is characterized by extensive gibber plains, where wind removes finer material and leaves a surface pavement of closely packed stones, interspersed with dunes, channels, and sparse vegetation.
