Terra Mystica

The heavy strategy board game Terra Mystica was designed by the duo Jens Drögemüller and Helge Ostertag. It was officially released in 2012 to widespread critical acclaim in the tabletop gaming community. The designers are highly respected for creating deeply complex, yet balanced, economic engines in their games.

In Terra Mystica, the primary goal is to develop and expand your faction's territory across a diverse landscape, earning victory points by building structures and upgrading your economy. Players must terraform the land to match their specific faction's home terrain type before they can build on it. The player with the most victory points at the end of six rounds wins.

Terraforming is a core mechanic where players must spend workers and magical power to transform a hex tile into their faction's home terrain. For example, the Mermaids favor water terrain, while the Dwarves work with mountains. Players must carefully manage their resources and upgrade their terraforming spades to make this process more efficient.

While both Terra Mystica and Scythe are heavy, resource-management strategy games with highly detailed miniatures, they are not related and were created by different designers. Terra Mystica was designed by Jens Drögemüller and Helge Ostertag, whereas Scythe was created by Jamey Stegmaier. They appeal to similar audiences but feature entirely different mechanics and lore.
