help El Grande FAQ

What does the Castillo do in El Grande?

The Castillo hides every caballero placed inside it until a scoring round. Players then secretly choose a region and move their hidden caballeros there, which can abruptly change control of the map.

Why can nobody place caballeros in the King's region?

The King's region is protected, so caballeros cannot be moved into or out of it under the normal rules. The King's location also determines which neighboring regions can receive caballeros from a player's court.

How many people can play the original El Grande?

The classic 1995 edition supports two to five players, despite some catalog descriptions listing a four-player maximum. Its area-control system is especially associated with games of three to five players.

Who designed El Grande, and what major award did it win?

Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Ulrich designed El Grande, and Hans im Glück first published it in 1995. It won the 1996 Spiel des Jahres.
