description Vasyugan Swamp Overview
help Vasyugan Swamp FAQ
Is the Vasyugan Swamp a single open marsh?
No. The Great Vasyugan Mire is a vast mosaic of raised bogs, fens, forested mires, pools, and river headwaters on the West Siberian Plain.
How large is the Great Vasyugan Mire?
UNESCO's tentative-list description gives an area of more than 55,000 square kilometres. It stretches roughly 550 kilometres from west to east across parts of several Russian regions.
Is the Vasyugan Mire already a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
No. Russia submitted part of the Great Vasyugan Mire to UNESCO's Tentative List in 2007, but tentative status is not the same as inscription on the World Heritage List.
Where does the Vasyugan Mire's water go?
The mire occupies the watershed between the Ob and Irtysh river systems and feeds numerous tributaries. Its peat and wetland vegetation store water, slow runoff, and support headwater ecosystems across western Siberia.
