Vickers VC10

description Vickers VC10 Overview

The Vickers VC10 is a British long-range narrow-body jet airliner developed by Vickers-Armstrongs and later built by the British Aircraft Corporation. It first flew in June 1962 and entered service with BOAC in April 1964, designed specifically for routes to Africa and Asia that required strong hot-and-high performance from short runways. The type is distinguished by its four rear-mounted Rolls-Royce Conway turbofan engines, paired in nacelles on each side of the rear fuselage with a T-tail configuration. The Royal Air Force operated VC10s as aerial refueling tankers and transports from the 1970s until retirement in September 2013.
