Wilfred Thesiger

He is most famous for making two historic crossings of the Rub' al Khali, also known as the Empty Quarter, in the Arabian Peninsula. He accomplished this monumental feat between 1945 and 1950.

He traveled using strictly traditional means, trekking on foot and riding camels alongside local Bedouin companions. He completely rejected modern vehicles, believing they would fundamentally ruin the experience of the desert.

He famously documented his incredible journeys in his acclaimed 1959 memoir, Arabian Sands. The book is considered a classic of travel literature for its profound respect for the Bedouin culture.

He is viewed as one of the final Western explorers to traverse remote regions like the Empty Quarter entirely before the arrival of modernization. His travels captured a way of life in the desert that would soon be altered forever by the discovery of oil.
