Winter moth

description Winter moth Overview

The winter moth (Operophtera brumata) is a geometer moth native to Europe and western Asia. Males fly on cold nights in late autumn and early winter, while females have vestigial wings and cannot fly, climbing surfaces and releasing pheromones to attract mates. Larvae hatch in early spring and feed on the buds and leaves of oaks, maples, apples, and other broadleaf trees. Introduced to North America, it has become an invasive defoliator in the northeastern United States and Canada, where the parasitic tachinid fly Cyzenis albicans has been released as biological control.
