Woody Bay

Woody Bay is a small coastal inlet situated on the rugged north Devon coast. It is located approximately 3 kilometers west of Lynton, entirely within the boundaries of Exmoor National Park. The bay is easily accessed via a scenic drive along the A39.

Woody Bay is characterized by steep cliffs and a predominantly rocky shoreline. There is very limited sand visible at high tide, but a stretch of sand and rock pools is revealed as the tide goes out. The dramatic landscape is better suited for coastal walks than traditional beach lounging.

Woody Bay features the remnants of a Victorian pier that was constructed in the late 19th century to attract paddle steamer tourists. The ambitious project was ultimately a commercial failure and suffered heavy storm damage shortly after its completion. Today, only the foundations and a few stone pillars remain visible at low tide.

Yes, Woody Bay is directly located along the North Devon section of the South West Coast Path. Hikers frequently pass through the bay while trekking between Lynton and the Valley of Rocks. The path offers dramatic, elevated views of the bay's steep cliffs and the Bristol Channel.
