Yinshan Petroglyphs

The engravings were produced across a very long period, beginning in prehistoric times and continuing into historical eras. Differences in technique and subject matter show that the Yinshan Mountains were used by multiple communities rather than one Neolithic culture alone.

Common subjects include wild and domesticated animals, hunting scenes, riders, and pastoral life. Horses, deer, and other steppe fauna help connect the art with changing subsistence patterns in Inner Mongolia.

They are distributed across the Yinshan mountain region of Inner Mongolia rather than concentrated on one small panel. The large geographic spread is one reason the complex is regarded as a major Chinese rock-art concentration.

Most images are pictorial engravings, but some locations also preserve marks or inscriptions from historical periods. These later additions help demonstrate that people revisited the same rock landscapes over many centuries.
