Calliptamus italicus, commonly referred to as the Italian locust, is a species of short-horned grasshopper widely distributed across the steppes and agricultural regions of Europe and Central Asia. Like other locust species, it can undergo behavioral and physical changes when population densities are high, transitioning from a solitary state to a gregarious, swarming phase. These swarms are highly destructive and historically have caused severe damage to crops and pastures.
