Mari, also known as Tell Hariri, was an ancient city on the Euphrates in present-day eastern Syria. It flourished at different times during the third and early second millennia BCE, and excavations uncovered a large royal palace containing an archive of more than 20,000 cuneiform tablets. The documents include administrative records and diplomatic correspondence, while Hammurabi of Babylon captured and destroyed the city in the eighteenth century BCE.
