description Ain Ghazal Overview
Ain Ghazal is a Neolithic settlement on the outskirts of modern Amman, Jordan, occupied from about 7250 to 5000 BCE. It was a substantial early farming community with houses, storage areas, and evidence of changing food production and craft activity. Excavations uncovered human-shaped figures made from lime plaster, including hollow statues with painted features that date to the Neolithic period and provide evidence of early monumental representation in the Near East. The site is important for research on settled life, ritual practices, and social change during the Neolithic.
