Claude Joseph Sauthier

Sauthier produced highly detailed maps of the American colonies, focusing primarily on the provinces of New York and North Carolina. His surveys provided British military authorities with critical geographic intelligence during the colonial era and the American Revolutionary War, documenting settlements, roads, topography, and property boundaries with unusual precision for the period.

Sauthier worked as a surveyor for William Tryon, serving under him when Tryon was the colonial governor of North Carolina in the 1760s and later when Tryon became governor of New York. Sauthier followed Tryon from North Carolina to New York, continuing to produce detailed maps that supported Tryon's administrative and military objectives in both provinces.

Sauthier's maps of North Carolina from the late 1760s are among the most detailed colonial-era surveys of the province, documenting inland settlements, roads, and county boundaries that few other cartographers captured with comparable accuracy. Historians and genealogists still consult his work to understand the geography and settlement patterns of pre-Revolutionary War North Carolina.

Original maps by Claude Joseph Sauthier are held in institutional collections including the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, and the National Archives in the United Kingdom. His 1779 map of the Province of New York and his North Carolina surveys are among his most historically significant surviving cartographic works.
