Timimoun Oasis

Timimoun is known as the 'Red Oasis' because of its distinctive red-ochre mud-brick architecture, which contrasts sharply with the green date palms of the oasis. This traditional Sudanese architectural style gives the entire Algerian town a remarkably unified, striking aesthetic.

Timimoun is a town and oasis located in the Adrar Province of Algeria, situated on the Tademaït Plateau in the western Sahara. It lies roughly halfway between the major cities of Ghardaïa to the north and Adrar to the south.

The red-ochre town of Timimoun is built on a plateau overlooking a large sebkha, which is a dry, saline salt flat. This vast, white depression is a remnant of an ancient lakebed and creates a stark, mineral-laced landscape at the edge of the town.

The Timimoun Oasis relies on an ancient and sophisticated system of underground irrigation channels known as foggaras (or qanats). This gravity-fed system taps into deep groundwater aquifers and distributes the water efficiently to the palm groves without the need for modern pumping mechanisms.
