Principe Scops Owl

This small owl species is strictly endemic to Príncipe Island, which is part of the African island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe. It exclusively inhabits the island's native, dense tropical forests.

The owl was officially scientifically described and named as a new species in 2022, making it an incredibly recent ornithological discovery. Researchers confirmed its status as a distinct species using bioacoustic data and genetic testing.

The bird is highly secretive, nocturnal, and perfectly camouflaged within the dense, dark canopies of Príncipe's forests. It was eventually identified because scientists noticed that its distinct vocalizations were entirely different from other known owls.

Because the species is only found in a limited geographic area, it is considered highly vulnerable to habitat loss. Environmentalists are closely monitoring its native forest habitat to ensure its long-term survival in the Gulf of Guinea.
