Rapids Clubtail

The Rapids Clubtail is native to North America and is typically found in the eastern United States and parts of southeastern Canada. As their name suggests, they are habitat specialists that prefer clear, fast-flowing streams and rivers where they can hunt and reproduce.

This specific species of dragonfly is a member of the Gomphidae family, which encompasses various clubtail dragonflies. Insects in this family are generally characterized by their distinctive eyes that do not touch at the top of their head, setting them apart from other dragonfly families.

Like most dragonfly nymphs, the aquatic larvae of the Rapids Clubtail are ambush predators that feed on a variety of small aquatic organisms. They cling to rocks in their fast-flowing river habitats to hunt for insect larvae, small crustaceans, and occasionally tiny fish or tadpoles.

The insect gets its name from two distinct physical and behavioral traits: its preference for river rapids and the club-like widening at the end of its abdomen. This abdominal clubbing is a visual hallmark of the Gomphidae family, particularly prominent in the male of the species.
