description Megiddo Overview

Megiddo is an archaeological tell in northern Israel overlooking the Jezreel Valley, occupied continuously from approximately 7000 BCE through the Iron Age. Its strategic location on a major trade and military route made it the site of numerous battles throughout antiquity, and it is identified as the biblical Armageddon, referenced in the Book of Revelation. Excavations have revealed approximately 26 stratified layers of settlement including Canaanite and Israelite city gates, palaces, and a water system.
