description Quirigua Overview
Quirigua is an ancient Maya city in the department of Izabal, Guatemala, inhabited from at least the second century AD and especially prominent during the eighth century. Its archaeological park preserves carved stelae, zoomorphic monuments, and hieroglyphic texts recording dates, rulers, celestial events, and political history. Stela E, the site's tallest carved monolith, reaches about 10.6 meters, and the monuments were carved between AD 426 and 810.
