Lev Kamenev was a Russian revolutionary and Bolshevik politician who became one of the senior leaders of the Soviet state after the 1917 Revolution. He chaired the Moscow Soviet and served on the Communist Party's leading bodies, but later entered opposition to Joseph Stalin and was tried in the first Moscow Trial in 1936. Kamenev was convicted and executed that year during the political repression known as the Great Purge.
