description Abimael Guzmán Overview
Abimael Guzmán was a Peruvian Marxist-Leninist-Maoist militant and philosophy professor who founded the Communist Party of Peru, commonly known as Shining Path or Sendero Luminoso. The organization began its armed campaign against the Peruvian state in 1980 and became responsible for extensive violence during Peru's internal conflict. Guzmán was captured in Lima in 1992, later received a life sentence, and died in prison in 2021.
