Betsiboka Delta

The Betsiboka Delta is a prominent river delta located on the northwestern coast of Madagascar. It forms where the Betsiboka River empties directly into the Mozambique Channel.

The delta is characterized by massive, highly visible red and orange sediment plumes flowing into the ocean. This striking visual is the result of severe lateritic soil erosion upstream, largely driven by extensive deforestation.

The erosion is primarily caused by massive deforestation in Madagascar's interior, which strips the land of the root systems that hold the red soil in place. Heavy seasonal rains then easily wash the loose lateritic soil down the river.

Despite the heavy sediment, the delta consists of numerous riverine islands that host diverse coastal ecosystems, including mangrove forests. These mangroves provide vital habitat for various aquatic species and local bird populations.
