Budd RDC

description Budd RDC Overview

Budd RDC, short for Rail Diesel Car, is a family of self-propelled diesel passenger railcars built by the Budd Company beginning in 1949. The cars used stainless-steel bodies and were designed to provide economical service on branch lines and other routes where locomotive-hauled trains were difficult to justify. Different RDC versions combined passenger seating with baggage, mail, or other accommodation, and the cars could operate singly or in multiple-unit formations.

help Budd RDC FAQ

What is a Budd RDC?

The Budd Rail Diesel Car is a self-propelled stainless-steel passenger railcar introduced in 1949. Unlike a conventional coach, it carries its own diesel engines and can operate without a separate locomotive. [VIA Historical Association](https://viahistory.ca/equipment/rdc-6133/rdc-backgrounder/)

Why was stainless steel important to the Budd RDC?

Stainless steel gave the RDC a durable, corrosion-resistant body suited to long passenger service and reduced the need for heavy painted construction. The car’s self-contained design also made it practical for smaller routes where a full locomotive and train would be inefficient. Could a Budd RDC run by itself?

Yes. Most RDC variants used twin underfloor diesel engines, torque-converter transmissions, and driving cabs at both ends, allowing a single car to work a lightly used route. Multiple RDCs could also be coupled into a short train. [VIA Historical Association](https://viahistory.ca/equipment/rdc-6133/rdc-backgrounder/)

What were the main Budd RDC variants?

The RDC-1 was primarily a passenger car, while variants such as the RDC-2, RDC-3, and RDC-4 added combinations of baggage, mail, and passenger space. The family was designed around the same self-propelled stainless-steel railcar concept introduced in 1949. [VIA Historical Association](https://viahistory.ca/equipment/rdc-6133/rdc-backgrounder/)
