Deltchev Release

description Deltchev Release Overview

The Deltchev is a release move recognized in elite gymnastics, performed on either the men's horizontal bar or the women's uneven bars. Named after Bulgarian gymnast and 1980 Olympic gold medalist Stoyan Deltchev, the skill is classified in the FIG Code of Points as a forward swinging salto. To execute the element, a gymnast swings forward, releases the bar, performs a straddled forward flip, and catches the bar to continue their routine. The move has been a standard release element in international competition since the late 1970s.

help Deltchev Release FAQ

How is a Deltchev Release performed?

From a forward swing on the high bar, the gymnast makes a 180-degree half turn and performs a forward salto, usually straddled or piked, before regrasping the bar. It is a release to hang, not a dismount to the floor.

Who was Stoyan Deltchev?

Stoyan Deltchev was a Bulgarian gymnast who won the men's horizontal bar gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The high-bar release named for him is one of his eponymous skills in the FIG Code of Points.

How is the Deltchev different from a Gienger?

A Deltchev uses a forward swing and starts the half turn before a forward salto, while a Gienger is a backward salto with a half twist. Both are release moves that return to the same bar, but their entry direction is different.

What difficulty value does a Deltchev have?

The current women's FIG table lists the straddled or piked Deltchev on uneven bars as a D element worth 0.4. The men's high-bar table lists the named Deltchev as a C element worth 0.3, so the apparatus and code matter.
