The Murgab River, also spelled Murghab, rises in Afghanistan and flows westward into Turkmenistan. Its water supports irrigation and the agricultural areas associated with the Merv oasis before the river disappears in the Karakum Desert rather than reaching an open sea. The river is therefore an inland drainage system of Central Asia, and its course links Afghan headwaters with one of Turkmenistan's historic oasis regions.
