The Murzuq Desert, also known as the Idhan Murzuq, is a major erg, or sand sea, located in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya. Covering an area of approximately 100,000 square kilometers, it is characterized by large, crescent-shaped dunes that can reach heights of over one hundred meters. The desert is a prominent feature of the hyper-arid central Sahara, experiencing some of the driest conditions on the continent. Historically, it served as a formidable natural barrier along trans-Saharan trade routes.
