MV Prestige

description MV Prestige Overview

MV Prestige was a single-hulled oil tanker that suffered structural damage during a storm off Galicia, Spain, in November 2002. After being kept away from the coast while leaking heavy fuel oil, the vessel broke apart and sank in the Atlantic, releasing a large portion of its cargo. The resulting pollution affected coastlines in Spain, Portugal, and France, damaged fisheries and marine habitats, and prompted extensive cleanup operations and debate over tanker safety and emergency decision-making.

insights Ranking position

MV Prestige ranks #85 of 186 in the Shipwreck ranking, behind SS Atlantic (1873), ahead of USS Cyclops.
