Percale

Percale sheets are typically woven in the 200 to 400 thread count range, with 200 to 300 being the most common and balanced range for combining breathability with durability. Higher thread counts in percale are possible but can reduce the fabric's characteristic crispness and may not meaningfully improve comfort.

Percale uses a simple one-over, one-under plain weave that creates a matte surface with a crisp, cool feel, while sateen uses an asymmetrical weave with more yarns floating on the surface to create a smooth, lustrous finish with a softer, warmer hand. The two weaves produce fundamentally different tactile experiences from similar cotton yarns.

Percale's tight plain weave allows for excellent airflow and a cool, crisp surface against the skin, making it a popular choice for hot sleepers and warm climates. The matte finish and breathable structure generally sleep cooler than sateen weaves, which tend to trap more body heat due to their denser surface yarns.

Percale's plain-weave construction tends to wrinkle more readily than sateen or synthetic-blend fabrics, which many percale enthusiasts consider part of the fabric's relaxed, lived-in character. Removing sheets promptly from the dryer and using a low heat setting can reduce wrinkling, though the crisp nature of percale means some creasing is inherent to the weave.
