description Ruaha River Overview
The Ruaha River is a major river in Tanzania approximately 950 kilometers long, flowing through the southern highlands before joining the Rufiji River system. It gives its name to Ruaha National Park, one of Tanzania's largest protected areas, which supports significant populations of elephants, lions, wild dogs, and other large mammals along the river's course. The greater Ruaha ecosystem is considered one of East Africa's most important wildlife areas, with high levels of biodiversity. Water flow in the river has become increasingly seasonal in recent decades, partly due to upstream irrigation use.
