SS Valencia

description SS Valencia Overview

SS Valencia was a passenger steamship that wrecked on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island in January 1906 while traveling from San Francisco to Seattle. After striking a reef in poor weather, the vessel became trapped near a rugged shoreline, where heavy seas frustrated evacuation and rescue efforts. More than 130 people died, making the wreck one of the Pacific Northwest's most notorious maritime disasters and prompting scrutiny of lifesaving equipment and coastal rescue arrangements.
