description Tardy Geyser Overview
Tardy Geyser is a small thermal feature located in the Sawmill Group of the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. It was named for its delayed and irregular eruption intervals, which frequently lag behind the active cycles of neighboring geysers. When active, its eruptions typically reach a modest height of a few feet, characterized by steady water discharge. The geyser provides geologists with insights into the complex subterranean plumbing connections among thermal features in the park.
help Tardy Geyser FAQ
Where is Tardy Geyser located in Yellowstone?
It sits in the Sawmill Group of the Upper Geyser Basin, the area near Old Faithful that contains the world's greatest concentration of geysers. It can be reached from the boardwalk trails that loop through the basin.
Why is it called Tardy Geyser?
The name comes from its habit of erupting 'tardily,' with intervals that lag behind and fail to keep pace with the cycles of the neighboring geysers in its group. Early park observers gave it the name because of that delayed behavior.
Can you predict when Tardy Geyser will erupt?
Not reliably. Unlike Old Faithful, whose intervals are closely predicted by the National Park Service, Tardy's eruptions are irregular and infrequent. Geyser enthusiast trackers such as GeyserTimes are the best source for recent observed activity.
What other geysers are near Tardy Geyser?
It belongs to the Sawmill Group, which also includes Sawmill Geyser and the frequently active Spasmodic Geyser. The wider Upper Geyser Basin contains famous neighbors like Old Faithful, Castle Geyser, and Grand Geyser.
