description Tasman Abyssal Plain Overview
The Tasman Abyssal Plain is a broad, nearly level region of deep seafloor in the Tasman Sea between southeastern Australia and New Zealand. Much of it lies at roughly 4,500 to 5,000 metres below sea level, within the ocean's lightless abyssal zone, and its crust formed during Late Cretaceous seafloor spreading. Ocean-drilling sites such as IODP Site U1511 provide sediment records for studying the plain's geological history.
