Variable Checkerspot

description Variable Checkerspot Overview

The Variable Checkerspot (Euphydryas chalcedona) is a butterfly species native to western North America, frequently found from the Pacific Northwest down through California and into Baja California. It is highly polymorphic, meaning its wing patterns vary significantly across different regions and subspecies, typically featuring complex bands of black, red, orange, and white. This species typically inhabits chaparral, oak woodlands, and montane environments where its larval host plants, such as various species of monkeyflower and figwort, are abundant. Adults generally emerge in the spring and early summer to breed and feed on nectar.
