Fisherman's Bastion

Fisherman's Bastion is situated on the Buda side of Budapest, on Castle Hill in the historic district near Matthias Church. Its elevated position provides panoramic views across the Danube River toward the Hungarian Parliament building.

The structure was completed in 1902 after several years of construction under the design of architect Frigyes Schulek. Schulek also oversaw the major restoration of the adjacent Matthias Church during the same period.

The name comes from the Fishermen's Guild, which was historically responsible for defending this section of the city walls during the Middle Ages. The guild's association with this part of the Buda Castle district dates back to the medieval period.

It is built in a neo-Romanesque style, characterized by its white stone, seven ornamental towers representing the seven Magyar tribes that settled the Carpathian Basin, and decorative arcades. The design was meant to evoke a fairytale-like medieval aesthetic rather than serve any military function.

The lower level arcades and walkways are open to the public free of charge at all times. Access to the upper towers requires a small admission fee during daytime hours, typically between spring and autumn.
