Adolf von Baeyer

Adolf von Baeyer received the 1905 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The award recognized his work on organic dyes and hydroaromatic compounds, including research connected to indigo.

Indigo was a major dye before modern synthetic chemistry transformed textile production. Baeyer's studies helped clarify its structure and supported the broader shift from natural dyes to industrial organic dyes.

Baeyer proposed an early theory about strain in carbon rings, especially why some ring sizes are more stable than others. Later chemistry refined the model, but it was an important step in thinking about molecular geometry.

The similar names often cause confusion, but Adolf von Baeyer was not the founder of Bayer AG. Bayer the company was founded in the 19th century by Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott.
