Lamanai is a major archaeological site of the ancient Maya civilization located in northern Belize along the New River Lagoon. The site was continuously occupied from approximately 1500 BCE until the 17th century CE, making it one of the longest-inhabited Maya cities. The name Lamanai translates to 'submerged crocodile' in the Maya language, and the site features several significant structures including the Mask Temple, which displays a 13-foot stone mask of a Maya king wearing a crocodile headdress, and the High Temple, which rises 108 feet above the jungle canopy.
