Jean Dubuffet

Dubuffet coined Art Brut in 1945 for raw art made outside academic and official art systems. He was especially interested in work by psychiatric patients, self-taught makers, and people outside museum culture.

The Collection de l'Art Brut is in Lausanne, Switzerland. It opened to the public in 1976 and grew from Dubuffet's long collecting project.

The Hourloupe cycle is a long series of paintings, sculptures, and environments built from red, blue, white, and black cellular patterns. Dubuffet worked on it mainly from the 1960s into the 1970s.

Dubuffet rejected polished academic taste and wanted painting to feel raw, bodily, and immediate. Works such as the Corps de dames series from the early 1950s deliberately challenge conventional beauty.
