description Flaminian Obelisk Overview
The Flaminian Obelisk is an ancient Egyptian granite monolith currently located in the center of the Piazza del Popolo in Rome, Italy. It was originally carved during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II and erected at Heliopolis. The Roman emperor Augustus transported the obelisk to Rome in 10 BC to serve as a spoil of war and a symbol of imperial dominance. In 1589, Pope Sixtus V relocated and re-erected the monument as part of a broader urban renewal project, and it remains a primary landmark for historians of classical antiquity and urban planning.
