Ugarit (Ras Shamra)

description Ugarit (Ras Shamra) Overview

Ugarit, located at modern Ras Shamra on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, was a major Bronze Age port and trading center that flourished between approximately 1450 and 1185 BCE. Excavations beginning in 1929 under French archaeologist Claude Schaeffer uncovered cuneiform tablets bearing texts in Ugaritic, a West Semitic language written in one of the earliest known alphabetic scripts. The tablets include administrative records, diplomatic correspondence, and literary and religious texts that have provided significant information about ancient Levantine culture.
