The Kofun period was an era of ancient Japanese history traditionally dated from about 250 to 538 CE. It is named for kofun, large burial mounds built for powerful rulers and other members of the elite, many of them shaped like a keyhole when viewed from above. The period marks the growth of regional political authority before the formation of the centralized state associated with the Asuka period.
