Bhumibol Adulyadej (1927-2016), known by the regnal title Rama IX, was king of Thailand from 1946 until his death. A member of the Chakri dynasty, he reigned within a constitutional monarchy through repeated military coups, constitutional changes, and periods of rapid economic development. His seven-decade reign was the longest in Thai history, and he was succeeded by his son Maha Vajiralongkorn.
