description 72 Feronia Overview
72 Feronia, formally (72) Feronia, is a dark main-belt asteroid discovered on 29 May 1861 by Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York. It was named after Feronia, a Roman deity associated with fertility. Peters initially thought the object might be the already known asteroid 66 Maja, but later observations established it as a separate body. Light-curve studies estimate a rotation period of about 8.09 hours and have been used to produce a three-dimensional shape model.
